Bell ringing in English churches dates back 500 years and some of the ringing patterns are over 300 years old. It is a hobby that can be all consuming. It demands co-ordination and rhythm (but not immense strength) and varies from fairly simple patterns on a small number of bells to increasingly complex patterns on 12 bells.
Saint Mary’s church Gressenhall is unique in Norfolk as it is the only village church to have 10 bells. The tenor bell weighs just under half a ton. All the bells have been recently serviced and new bell ropes installed early in 2026. Work will commence shortly to improve access to the tower.
We have an enthusiastic group of ringers who meet to practice on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome to come along then and ‘have a go’ under expert supervision. We are very fortunate to have two elite ringers who come to teach us.
